Workshop as part of the International Comparative Literature Association Congress
Paris, France, July 18 - 24, 2013
Writing the dream / Écrire le rêve
The dream as a basic anthropological phenomenon has continuously fascinated and puzzled people in all cultures and ages, as it confronts us with a "second" reality, which is obviously very different from that of our waking lives. This difference has led to the use, elaboration, maybe even invention of a multitude of devices (like the fantastic, the grotesque, the absurd, metamorphosis, écriture automatique, defamiliarisation/alienation-effects, symbolism/semiotics, allegorical patterns, anti-realistic writing, etc.) in order to do justice to the "other" of the dream, but also to attempts to reduce its otherness, to domesticate and normalize it.
The workshop will be devoted to all sorts of dream-narrations: in diaries, letters, dream-diaries, medical or psychological case-studies, and all kinds of literary works (dream satires, dream allegories, dream travels, dreams in narratives, novels, plays and poems). We are looking for systematic papers on the poetics of the dream (fictional or non-fictional) and for case-studies of literary or non-literary dreams. The latter should concentrate on the comparison of two or three dream-texts of different types (e.g. fictional/non fictional, different literary periods, different languages and cultures, different literary kinds).
